Region: Phoka Hills/Nyika Plateau
Varietal: Nyika & Geisha
Phoka Hills is located in the eastern part of Nyika National Park, Northern Malawi. Growers involved in this project are part of the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union. The cooperative is now made up of over 3000 small-holder member farmers, most of whom are 2nd or 3rd generation coffee producers. Nearly 25% of the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union are women operating their own parcels of land.
This particular lot is sourced from female producers. The project aims to support female producers by paying them directly for the coffee they produce. Traditionally, male family members (usually husbands) will take control of all income generated through farming. Sadly earnings are often withheld from female family members, restricting basic economic freedom and access to basic goods and services.
